DEPLOYED: Detection of archaeological proxies using low altitude systems and pedological studies

Department of Civil Engineering and Geoinformatics of Cyprus University of Technology (€20.000,00).

Description:

Remote sensing has been effectively applied since the first images have become available to archaeologists and researchers. Indeed, since the second half of the last century, satellite images have been largely employed in archaeological research, providing a relevant contribution to studying partially known sites or exploring completely unknown archaeological deposits. Archaeological research using remote sensing approaches gained more motivation for a more systematic exploitation of geospatial data. In addition, the democratization of low altitude systems, with drones at relevant low costs, has been widely adopted in the last decade in archaeological research, mainly for documentation purposes and less for detecting archaeological proxies. In addition, archaeological computational approaches have shifted from desktop-based applications to cloud-based approaches blended with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. Due to its increasingly powerful predictive capabilities, AI is showing an increasing trend in attracting widespread interest in many sciences. The DEPLOYED project aims to exploit these state-of-the-art technologies further and develop low-altitude data acquisition and process methodologies and protocols for the detection of archaeological crop marks using low-altitude systems.

Research Coordinator: Ass. Prof. Athos Agapiou (Cyprus University of Technology).

Duration: 01/06/2024 – 31/05/2025

Funding: ΣΕΕΚ ΤΕΠΑΚ €20.000,00.
